From the critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling author of When No One Is Watching comes a riveting thriller about the new caretaker of a historic estate who finds herself trapped on an island with a murderer—and the ghosts of her past.

Years after a breakdown and a diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder derailed her historical preservationist career, Kenetria Nash and her alters have been given a second chance they can't refuse: a position as resident caretaker of a historic home. Having been dormant for years, Ken has no idea what led them to this isolated Hudson River island, but she's determined not to ruin their opportunity.

Then a surprise visit from the home's conservation trust just as a Nor'easter bears down on the island disrupts her newfound life, leaving Ken trapped with a group of possibly dangerous strangers—including the man who brought her life tumbling down years earlier. When he turns up dead, Ken is the prime suspect.

Caught in a web of secrets and in a race against time, Ken and her alters must band together to prove their innocence and discover the truth of Kavanaugh Island—and their own past—or they risk losing not only their future, but their life.

Narrator Susan Dalian squanders a golden opportunity for a standout performance in this unique audio mystery. Dalian is perfunctory in voicing historical preservationist Kenetria Nash, who is trapped with a killer on a remote Hudson island. Ken's dissociative identity disorder takes center stage, but Dalian fails to create any vocal distinction among the cast of diverse "alters." Aside from the baby-voiced Kiki, the many characters sharing a body with Ken sound nearly identical despite their differences in age, gender, and disposition. The absence of distinct vocal personalities exacerbates the fact that the first 30 chapters are filled almost entirely with tedious bickering among Ken's alternate personalities. Dalian's one-note performance makes the incessant internal arguments inside Ken's mind extremely difficult to follow. J.T. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Years ago, a diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder derailed the preservationist career of Kenetria Nash. Now Ken and her seven headmates have been offered a second chance: serving as a caretaker at a historic estate on an island in the middle of the Hudson River. With a surprise visit from the estate's conservation trust and a Nor'easter bearing down, Ken is left trapped on an island with strangers. Things get worse when one of them is found dead, and she is the main suspect. Caught in a web of lies, Ken and her alters must solve the murder before it's too late. Susan Dalian expertly narrates Ken and her many alters, who range from middle-aged adults to a young child of four. Dalian's narration makes it easier to keep track of who is speaking as the book jumps back and forth between Ken and her alters. While the premise of Cole's (When No One Is Watching) latest is intriguing, the storyline is sometimes disjointed, making for an occasionally bewildering listening experience. VERDICT A twisty, atmospheric thriller with a creepy gothic setting and a cast of unforgettable characters. For fans of Maria Dong's Liar, Dreamer, Thief.--Elyssa Everling
